As a young lad, I was a big fan of the comic strip The Phantom. I loved Defenders of the Earth (psst...I still do) and I was even a fan of the live-action movie from 1996. That thing really gets a bad rap, you know. So how did I feel when a new cartoon show came out? Well, I was confused when it turned out to be...
The show is an interesting idea, as it took the Phantom idea of fighting injustice and put it in a later time-period. It works off of the idea that the concept into a new setting. But it's also freaking weird as hell too. Why? Mostly the artwork...
Yeah, in case you can't tell, the artwork is done by the same people that did Aeon Flux. I really don't know why. It just makes the whole thing look very odd- stylish, but odd.
The show is pretty straight-forward. There is an evil corporate lady (voiced by Margot Kidder), her weird-ass son (plus his cat named after a poet), our hero, his African guide (who is a cyborg), his aunt and a weird white scientist guy. Due to the machinations of a shock jock (voiced by Mark Hamill), The Phantom is viewed as an enemy of the state and pursued by the cops. One of them is a young woman (voiced by The King of Queens' Leah Remini) who has a thing for The Phantom's alter-ego.
Yeah, they emulated Batman: The Animated Series a bit, although I don't recall Officer Montoya lusting after Bruce Wayne- just every other woman on the show did that.
In summary, it is an odd and stylish that is worth a look. The art-style is definitely going to be polarizing though. Give it a look-see.
