Tubi Thursday: Dune World/Sand World (2021)

Mark Polonia- why do I bother?

Oh right- he made a Dune rip-off (at least a Film marketed as one) in 2021.  Let's bite the bullet...

It is a dark future.
It's a shame that paying for lights is expensive.

If you think I'm making a lazy joke about this Film's low-budget, let me just show you their Robot Character...
Amidst a sea of pre-rendered Ships, Space and Desert Models in Dazzle, a ship full of, well, four people is going to Mars to mine Not Spice.

The bulk of their ship is a barely repurposed bit of office space.
They go to the Planet when something hits their ship and they have no choice.

They wander around in PPE, which oddly makes a recent Film about the far Future seem suddenly dated.

*slow clap*
On the Planet, they are attacked by...a Sand Worm....
Yes, it is a puppet.
Yes, Cecil from Beeny and Cecil looks better.

It is a Mark Polonia Film- you get what you pay for!
(that's why I watch them for Free on Tubi).

You don't need to know more- trust me.
Just enjoy this decent shot...that they probably just bought online.

The End.
On the plus side, it (hopefully) didn't take you an Hour to read this.  That's how long the Film is.
Don't worry- they stretch it to an Hour and 6 minutes with Credits.

It's bad.
It's cheap.
It barely tries.

Can't afford Sets?  Do something interesting...or just Film at random, tight angles in your own Office Space.  Don't hide the Room Signs or random objects- like a folding table sitting on its side- or anything.

Even putting the Budget aside, nothing interesting happens.  Lots of wandering in front of a Green Screen or in an Office.  Bad attempts at replicating Paul Atreides' visions.  Random shots of people that are supposed to mean something.

I won't SPOIL the Ending, but let's just say that it is lazy and I hate it.

At least this was the only Dune knock-off on Streaming in...and I can't even finish that sentence, can I?

Seriously, I've seen uninspired Films that cost $100 million or more.  If you did this exact same Film for the same amount, it would still be awful.

Al's Birthday Review: Feeders 3

It's Al's Birthday again, so I, Bob, must suffer. This year's horrific abuse of friendship?

Feeders 3? Aw, crap.

Feeders 3: The Final Meal is the conclusion to what was, apparently, a trilogy of movies despite the first and second films being made in the mid-1990s and the third in 2022. It's a bit of a stretch. So is calling any of these things "films," honestly.

Okay. Long story short: Feeders is a story, to use the term loosely, of friends Derek and Bennett discovering an alien invasion, and of aliens killing and eating people. Feeders 2: Slay Bells is the story of family dad Alan (and Santa Claus) discovering and fighting an alien invasion at Christmas, and is also to a significant degree just stock footage from Feeders.

This comes minutes into the film, and sadly, is a lie.

So, after a twenty year break, the series is back in a new film that absolutely no one asked for. The story this time? The murders from the first film are still unsolved, Alan's son is making a film about the murders blaming it all on aliens, a nearly retired FBI agent is investigating, and the Feeders are about to return after being away for unspecified reasons. Meanwhile, Derek is in a mental hospital and Alan is catatonic in a wheelchair.

You might think, by that description, that this film has a plot. You would be wrong. What it has is a series of stunningly poorly connected scenes in which characters largely talk about the events of Feeders and Feeders 2 in lieu of actually doing anything new, and then, about 30 minutes after your soul has exited your body due to sheer boredom, largely get killed off by the titular Feeders in extremely dull, poorly shot attack scenes that serve only to prove that the alien puppets and puppetry are just as bad as they were in the first two films. But don't worry, there has been a change: the blood and gore effects have somehow become worse.

Seriously, though. Nothing, absolutely nothing, of any consequence happens in this movie for about the first 30-40 minutes. We meet no characters who are actually doing anything that matters. We spend a lot of time with the film crew making the movie, a reporter reporting on Halloween and the making of the movie, a scientist studying a supposedly dead Feeder, a doctor treating Derek at the mental hospital, and the FBI Agent investigating the old crimes, but:
  • The film crew just sits there doing random scenes that are basically just reshoots of stuff from the first Feeders film with girls instead of guys as the leads, and are just as poorly acted.
  • The reporter is so pointless the film at one point actually forgets it is in the middle of her doing a report about the film and just carries on showing scenes with the film crew like the segment didn't start as clips from a news report.
    • She also notes at one point that "astrologists" are confused about meteor showers, apparently mixing up astrology and astronomy the same way anyone might if they did zero research for their film and were an idiot.
  • The scientist spends ages talking about Feeders, discovering the Feeder is alive, and feeding it potato chips, all while mumbling to himself in a highly questionable and mostly unintelligible accent, but doesn't make any kind of useful or interesting discovery. It's all just meaningless babble that goes nowhere.
  • The doctor treating Derek just ignores his warnings for most of the movie.
  • The FBI agent's investigation consists entirely of meeting with Derek once and declaring him guilty, then calling his boss to let him know Derek is guilty. Seriously. That's all he does.

Only two elements of the "plot" get any actual build: Derek has a hand wound from getting acid spit at him during the first film, and Alan shows vague reactions when he spots Feeders on the film set his son is running. But, again, Derek is locked up in an asylum and no one listens to him, and Alan is catatonic and no one pays attention to him, so the only two characters getting a remote amount of development are ignored by the rest of the movie.

Oh, also, I'm fairly certain the same actor plays the scientist, the director, and possibly Derek, though I can't be sure on the last because you barely ever see his face under the enormous, awful-looking gray wig they gave him.

But that only scratches the surface of just how bad this film is. Consider:
  • They use a ton of stock footage in the first of the reporter segments as she talks about Halloween, about the meteors, and more. That exact same stock footage is used later in the film to show, say, kids going trick or treating, or the aliens arriving. So basically, the reporter reports on footage from the future.
  • The reporter talks up the film-within-the-film and we hear statements from the director and cast, but in a later segment with the reporter, the director claims he's a longtime fan but is on the show for the first time, apparently having forgotten the earlier reporting on his movie.
  • Much like Feeders 2, the film features a large amount of footage from Feeders (and Feeders 2, in this case). It isn't like half the movie like in Feeders 2, but it's still far too much.
  • Horror movie show hosts feature multiple times in weird segments surrounding and interrupting the movie:
    • The film opens with Mr. Lobo telling us that we've waited 20 years for the next installment and the producers accept no responsibility if the film is "less than subpar." He notes that we've already paid for our tickets so we should shut our blowholes and enjoy the ride. He tells us "they're not bad movies, just misunderstood." Listen, movie, the fact that you know you're a crappy movie does not make it all right to be a crappy movie.
    • About halfway through, we get an intermission with horror hosts Marlena Midnight and Gore De Vol, the latter of whom explains to Millennials what an intermission was and how movie theaters make their money on overcharging for snacks.
    • I've not seen any of these folks' actual shows but they all seem more talented than the people making the actual movie here. Maybe have them do it?
Unsubtle Criswell reference by the guy who plays Criswell in the remake of Plan 9. Yay.

Eventually the feeders do start killing people, including:
  • A random road worker.
  • members of the film crew (whose deaths go largely unnoticed by the others despite it being like a 5 or 6 person crew).
  • an adult stealing candy from another adult at Halloween (though the scene is played like an adult stealing from a kid or teen, kind of).
  • a woman who somehow thinks the Feeders are children in costumes despite them being like a foot shorter than the shortest kid who would be capable of walking, much less walking alone, on Halloween.
  • An on-scene reporter who is part of a running gag where he can't hear the news anchor talking to him.
  • The scientist with the questionable accent.
  • The FBI agent, who is attacked outdoors at the same hotel as the two stars of the film while they are outdoors using a hot tub, but somehow they don't hear it.
  • Female Derek (i.e., the lady playing Derek in the film-within-a-film, who is only ever referred to by that name as far as I recall) while she takes a shower.
  • Presumably Female Bennet, though that isn't actually shown, after she leaves the hot tub because she's feeling cold, leading me to believe this film was created by an alien who possesses environmental immunity and therefore has never learned what temperatures mean. She also runs right into the FBI agent as Feeders are eating him and they both do a perfectly awful job of falling down, which is something that's kind of hard to screw up.
Insert Hulk Hogan "it's not hot" gag here.

  • A random couple who reference the series V for unknowable reasons.
  • The reporter and other folks at the studio as the alien invasion goes from 0 to entire global collapse in about a tenth of a second.

Of these, the only ones that manage any kind of suspense are the deaths of the FBI agent and female Derek, which at least do manage the most basic of horror movie setups and build a little tension. The rest are either dull jokes or boring exercises in predictability, or both.

There's literally too much stupid in this movie to go over all of it, so I'll just skip to the ending. Spoilers ahead if for some reason you actually give a crap about spoilers for Feeders 3, and if you do, God help you.

Why does a mental hospital have a random collection of national flags on a shelf?

So, we've offed most of the main characters, in as much as this movie has main characters, so we're left basically with two pairings: Derek and the doctor, and the director and his dad Alan.

The doctor hears the reporter's last broadcast and finally believes Derek, so she goes to see him, and he announces that he's figured out why he was left alive: because the aliens actually implanted aliens in him. I can only assume that no one's done, you know, an x-ray on him in the past 20 years, because that definitely seems like it would've shown up and proved his story. He dies via chestburster and the doctor flees.

Meanwhile, the director is feeding his catatonic dad when his dad sees feeders approaching and manages to warn his son. They get surrounded anyway and for some reason the movie throws in some subtitles as the aliens talk to each other, revealing they're two different groups that just decide to work together immediately anyway. That was pointless. Suddenly, Santa Claus shows up with a ray gun like he did in Feeders 2, but equally suddenly, dear old dad calls out to a UFO to kill Santa, so Santa gets blasted with a death ray and dies.

Dear old dad reveals the truth: He is, in fact, himself an alien agent. It's basically just an in-joke poking at what prior reviewers have noted about the franchise: this same guy, Mark Polonia, played the evil version of Bennett (not the good one, that was John Polonia apparently) in Feeders and also played Alan, the dad, in Feeders 2 and Feeders 3. Thus, Feeders 3 tries to mold all this together by claiming that evil Bennett was Alan - he came to observe and report, started a family, got attacked by a different group of feeders who didn't know who he was, got abducted by yet more feeders, returned catatonic, and has only just remembered who he was and now can apparently command both groups of feeders on Earth because this movie is incredibly stupid.

He reaches out to the director and quotes Vader's "rule the galaxy as father and son" line word for word except for switching "galaxy" for "earth." The doctor shows up too and adds, "and daughter," because she is apparently Alan's daughter even though that renders basically all of her reactions in all of her prior scenes completely nonsensical, and Alan and his alien son and daughter walk off into the light as Alan tells no one in particular they have a choice: "Join us and feed us, or pursue the present course and feed us anyway."

More feeder ships arrive, end credits, and Marlena wakes up post-credits after having fallen asleep, evidently from boredom.

Words cannot express how crappy Feeders 3 truly is. I would say that it must be seen to be believed, but that might encourage you to see it, which I do not recommend. The Astro-Zombies films actually have more developed plots than this, and I've ranted at Al for hours about how poorly plotted and nonsensical those films are when he's forced me to watch them. This was dangerously close to Actium Maximus-level bad, saved from that only by the dialogue actually generally being audible and intelligible.

Absolutely awful film. Happy Birthday, Al - the best birthday gift you could get is the knowledge that you have not watched Feeders 3.

Tubi Thursday: Land Shark (2017)

Alright, if you wanted the silly Chinese Film to look like an Oscar Winner, you get your wish.

It's the 2017 Film by...Mark Polonia.  Yep, the guy from Feeders 2 and Peter Rottentail.
Oh boy.

This one...has almost no Plot.

The only Plot you get is that Shark-Human Hybrids that can walk on land.

You don't really SEE any of them...so...yea.
The Budget is...I'm going to guess $20 and a few cases of White Claw.

As such, you get mostly just POV Shots and 1/5 of a second shots of a puppet.  That and them clearly just squirting fake blood from a Ketchup Container onto random objects.

So here's one of the few funny shots.
Our 'Heroes' eventually go to track down the Sharks- who apparently just escape off-camera when they feel like it.

This just involves them wandering around for long, long takes.
Hey look- another funny shot.

It wasn't worth the wait, so you're welcome.
The pair finally track down the last one, who changes model from the puppet to the brief CGI Model, and kill it near a Cabin.

Plot Twist- the guy becomes a Human-Shark Hybrid.
Double Plot Twist- he dies in like 50 seconds.

We get some Sequel Bait and we're out.
Ouch.  Just ouch.

In 2017, there was only one Polonia Brother- Jon died in 2008- but the Films didn't slow down.  As such, Mark churned out copycat Film after copycat Film.  For instance, a Camp Killer Film with a Clown that has IT in the Title.  Ouch.

In contrast, this is just a piece of shit.  It's not funny.  It's not a ripoff.  It's just a series of unfunny 'Kill Scenes' with little payoff.  Yell at the camera.  Off-camera shark.  'Blood' squirted.  Yawn.

The fun of watching terrible CGI is barely-there.  It's just a chore to get through.  The Score- which I'm sure is stock and never matches the Scenes- is nice.  The Establishing Shots- which were clearly bought as Stock Footage- are also nice.

I guess points for using good stuff...but alot of points lost for making terrible stuff to surround it.  Why not just make a Film about the real Land Shark- it is still more convincing!

Easter Fun (From the Past)

I didn't want to break up the rhythm of the Children of the Corn films with a Holiday review.  Plus, I barely update the site on Sundays anyways.  To that end, I'll re-post some of my previous Easter updates.  With so many new Followers, they may be new to you...

Peter Rottentail- From the makers of Feeders 2 comes a film about a mutant killer rabbit.  The pacing is odd, the acting is bad and the movie's budget wouldn't fund a homeless shelter for a month.  It's so bad that it's ridiculously-bad.  That's right- it's ridicu-bad!

As a bonus, here's some Pics that I never used...
Boo!
*
Rabbit Baby...sigh.
*
As much of a Strip Club as they could afford.
*
Kottentail- My Easter film from last year is so bad and random that even I don't believe it!  A man gets bitten by a lab bunny (actually a doll) and kills vaguely-hot chicks.  It takes a bizarre, comic turn, even while murders happen on a frequent basis.  It's the holiday equivalent of Project Terrible.
Hi, I'm from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints....
*
Thanks- that sketch is very helpful...
*
What is the point of the Panels again?
*
What will future holidays and/or Easters bring?  More crap- that's for sure!  Thanks for reading...

Happy Rabbit Day: Peter Rottentail

I really don't like holidays.  It's not that I have no holiday spirit or anything.  It's actually due to the crap that I end up watching on them.  Case in point: the entire two weeks around Christmas, which brought some 'classics' like Psycho Santa, Satan Claus and Feeders 2.  Speaking of Feeders 2, it was a film made by the infamous Polonia Brothers.  They were behind a shit-on of movies (today's film is apparently their 22nd!) and this continues to this day.  Of course, one of them died tragically in 2005.  On the plus side, it is long enough ago that I can freely mock him and his kin for their shitty movies.  This magnum opus was shot in 6 days and with a budget of less than what a single Friends cast member got in those last few seasons.  This is...
The film begins with a crappy magician failing to perform a trick or two at a party.  Get used to the word 'failing' in this review- it will show up a lot!  After leaving in desperation, he runs into a man who looks like Rob Zombie...as a bum who gives him some potion made out of witches tears, a virgin's blood and all sorts of cliched crap.  At the next party- hosted by one of the two Polonia Brothers- his tricks end just as badly.  In desperation, he drinks the potion and says that he is going to summon the spirit of Peter Rottentail.  Just to note: he was not told what the potion would do...so why did he think that this would work?  After getting booted from the party, he is spoken to by the spirit of the mysterious 'Zombie bum.'  A hat and a meat cleaver appear on the ground, he looks at the kid who walks out and...the movie cuts to the man committing suicide for fear of being arrested for what he did.  Um, what was that exactly?  As a bonus, the hat has hole already cut in it.  Why ever would it have those?  We are next introduced to our main characters: a redneck loser and a guy who looks like Lee from Still Gaming.  Joy.
Our two heroes are given the task of cleaning up grandma's house in order for it to be sold by the uncle.  Before that, a pair of stoners wander into the place looking for pot.  They stumble across a book and proceed to read a magic spell.  How magic is it?  It appears on the inset cover a book that has no words in it!  I know this because the actor turns the book just far enough downwards to reveal this fact.  Our title character shows up and stabs them to death with a carrot.  I can believe a lot, but you're pushing it, movie!  So this sub-human killer is the magician who escaped his own grave and plans to kill the now-grown-up kids from the party.  He gets one of them at the front of a house by tricking the bum into drinking witch's piss, which melts his insides and causes blood to pour out of his mouth.  Of course, since this movie has to pad out it's 65 minute run-time, he does this after about five minutes of stupid antics.  I'm more amused by Chucky and I freaking hate that puppet!  We also get a seemingly-unrelated sub-plot about a neighbor woman.  Oh, there is eventually pay-off, but it's stupid as hell.
After some more filler- including an 80's-style fixing things up montage- another random guy is killed by Rottentail as he sits at a pay-phone.  This adds nothing- thanks, movie.  The two heroes have some trouble and arguments about the 'Lee' constantly harping about the party from the beginning.  It's run into the ground so much that even his best friend hates him.  One unintentionally-funny bit has the white trash guy going to 'a strip club' that consists of the corner of a basement and a pinball machine!  More filler comes as Rottentail sneaks into the woman's house, only to say that he has no time for this.  Why did you do it then?!?!?  After showing the same 'going to bed shot,' the rabbit breaks in again later and greets her with a flower.  Naturally, she invites him in for sex.  Back to the 'plot,' Rottentail kills the white trash guy with the carrot through a silly P.O.V. shot.  When his friend comes back, he faces off with Peter.  Oh and he relives his memory of being chased to...safety.  You built all the way up to that nothing reveal, movie?!?  A silly fight breaks out and Rottentail is defeated after his hat is taken off and stepped on.  In our epilogue, the woman from before gives birth to...a talking Rottentail baby.  No sequel for you, movie!
This shit is terrible- plain and simple.  Mind you, it's a Sub Rosa film and by the Polonia Brothers- I knew that.  That said, it still managed to be more annoying and insulting than I could have possibly thought.  Where to begin?  The shitty writing, acting, production, editing and effects.  Yeah, that's a good start.  We get unimpressive deaths, annoying characters and a graveyard that looks worse than in Plan 9.  The film's production year- 2004.  The acting is incredibly-bad and even makes student films look bad.  That's the real key here: assumed quality.  While I don't expect much from Sub Rosa, the Polonia Brothers state in the Audio Commentary that this was their 22nd film.  Wouldn't you think that they could have put out an adequate plot or production by then?  One scene that summarizes the quality is this one.  The two leads go to the crappy graveyard and 'discover' the bodies of the stoners from earlier.  The lone shot of the bodies consists of them lying on what is clearly a carpet.  Close me out, ironic shot of a Polonia brother.
Next up, a British comic comes to us as the follow-up to my review of Gwendoline.  Will it be a dud or as awesome as a chariot pulled by Amazons?  Stay tuned...

Yuletide Crap: Feeders 2- Slay Bells

I really regret having seen this movie- as my friends can attest- and I want to save you the trouble. You could just stop here, but you would not realize why I hate it so much. As I stated in my original review from a couple of years ago, the movie is chock full of comedic potential. However, the filmmakers 'smothered their potential like a bag full of kittens.' A harsh metaphor, but very fitting one for this movie. The film is the brain-child of low-budget horror auteurs Mark and John Polonia, the latter of whom died in 2008. Even so, I will still not hesitate to stick it to them, especially considering that both of them also act in the movie. To give you a proper perspective, their films include The House That Screamed, Night Crawlers and Peter Rottentail. Yeah, this is going to hurt. This is the cinematic travesty of...
The movie begins, for some reason, in black and white. This is not a promising start for a movie made in 1998! The man is being interrogated by an unseen person and explaining that the aliens came and killed everyone. For no clear reason, we cut to color footage of an alien spaceship...or rather a crappy CG model of one. It makes a bunch of lights flash and some tiny aliens end up in the basement of the house. These are the worst aliens you will ever see in your entire life. The sad thing is this: they are the funniest part of the movie. These things are so hilariously-bad that you will wish they were the whole movie. Sadly, you have to watch Actium Maximus for that kind of film. Instead, the movie focuses on a family of people who have zero personality or charisma. The father is played by John Polonia, whose acting makes me wish I had died of a sudden heart aneurysm and not him! The wife is played a family friend, since she also appears in the original Feeders. How do I know this? Because the movie shows us her scenes, including the one where she dies, in the flashback parts! This hurts.
*
For all you who mock Silent Night, Deadly Night 2's use of stock footage for padding really need to see this movie (plus The Human Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy) for some perspective. At what seems like random, we get black and white flashbacks to the first film, as told by the man who 'survived it.' I should also mention that the original film ends with the Earth being blown up a la Save the Green Planet. This is both jarring and annoying. Case in point: a flashback showing the film's other protagonist, who is played by John Polonia. They never bother to address why he is a different person here or why he too dies! Unfortunately, the film also sticks to its real plot involving the man going to work, becoming interested in UFOs and being yelled at by his boss. These scenes really drag the film down...even lower than it already is by being immensely stupid and boring. There is a level of bad acting that is funny, but this film shoulder checks its way past that marker and just causes pain. In summary, Ed Wood acting = funny, Polonia Brothers acting = utter shit. By the way, the aliens show up and kill some random people in a warehouse. No, it adds nothing.
*
At this point, you are asking yourself why I ever rented this at all. Allow me to explain: Santa fights aliens with a laser gun. That premise alone is enough to lure most people to this film, where they will meet their untimely death. The siren's song of silliness here is ruined in execution by the movie. In short, you have to wait until the end for any of the good stuff. Santa's tiny model sleigh- complete with strings- is shot down by the aliens because...um, they feel like it. He gets to the family home for safety and must battle the creatures. If you thought that the monster attacks in Attack of the Killer Shrews was bad, wait until you see people having puppets thrown at them in this movie. Fortunately, Santa has an answer for the tiny aliens and their annoying sound effects: a laser gun. He blasts them with his gun via some of the worst special effects ever and chases them off. For the grand finale, he teleports a present up to their ship and blows them up. Ho ho holy crap, this had better be the end. Thank God- The End.
*
I have regretted many rentals in my life (Sex Medusa, Blood Freak, etc), but none as much as this. It is one of the worst films ever made for every reason you can think of. Bad production values- check. Bad script- check. Acting so bad that it blemishes the word- big check! On top of that, it does not have the decency of at least being funny. Many of these movies at least have their moments. Hell, even Blood Freak managed to do the bit where the man's leg gets cut off, but the table is covered in blood before it happens! In terms of painfulness, this movie is on par with One Million AC/DC, although without any drug-addicts humping in it. The actual story of the film is bad enough, but they felt the need to splice in the first movie as filler. If I wanted to watch Feeders, I would...why they would I want to do that again? Rent anything else but this movie and have a Merry Christmas!
*
Up next, I celebrate the post-Holiday time in the way that everyone does- with a Japanese film about a werewolf. I'm not weird, am I? Stay tuned...
