I'm kind of wondering how an Invasion from the INNER Earth involves a Spaceship, let alone a Version of the Enterprise (feel free to comment if I somehow called it the wrong name).
My only theory: this is the Story of Star Wreck told from the other perspective! This is modern-day Earth and Pirk has just shown up to take over.
Is my theory dumber than the actual reason? Possibly, but not likely.
