Are you ready to rumble...for undisclosed reasons?!?!? Today's film is Gantz, yet another film based on a Manga. You guys love doing that, don't you? Of course, America does that too, putting out such 'gems' as Dragonball: Evolution, Fist of the North Star (live-action) and Crying Freeman. I haven't actually seen the last movie, but I can't imagine that it 'breaks the mold.' So what is this *actually* Japanese movie about? Well, I won't SPOIL a whole lot here, as most of the film is built around revealing the plot. If you know all of it from the get-go, it doesn't feel the same way. To that end, this will mostly be a Teaser summary, but I will give my SPOILER-free thoughts in the wrap-up. If you like exploding creatures, black orbs and romance, this is the movie for you. To find out more, read on...
The film begins with two guys ending up in front of an oncoming train. This isn't Suicide Club again, is it?
They suddenly appear in an Apartment Building and see a black Orb in front of them. That evil Orb from Heavy Metal has grown up!
People are slowly scanned into the room via this legitimately-interesting effect. This is a good example, even if it does tease nudity that is not featured in the film.
What is an Onion Alien? Why are they sent to kill it?
I bet you'd love to know what happened here. To explain it would give away a bit too much, so I'll just tease you instead.
One of the main aspects of the movie is the romance between the male lead (although there are two) and the female one. They each have their own little romantic back-story that plays alongside the action plot. Speaking of which...
Astro-Boy has gone crazy! Actually, that doesn't even do this odd action scene justice. It doesn't all go according to plan either...
You haven't lived in Japan until you've fought a giant statue and/or Godzilla. Good to see Daimajin getting some work these days though.
Note to self: don't fight a creature with 100 arms, especially if it has swords in each one.
Who will live? Who will die? Will the movie ever explain its core concept? To be continued...
Aliens love to shoot, kill and...explain nothing. Gantz is a very Japanese movie- good or bad. The plot is a bit obtuse, even aside from the vague way that I explained it here. If you've seen the movie or read the Manga, you'll know more than I'm letting on. For the latter, I can't tell you if they captured the spirit of the original material. I read left to right, so that makes Manga a bit obtuse for me. Before you get mad, that's not really the reason- I'm just ambivalent to it is all. As a film, this movie is certainly interesting. The characters are varied and interesting, usually having at least one thing to do. There is one guy whose character is that he never really does anything- yea. When the movie actually explains anything, it kind of makes sense. As much as any plot involving aliens, exploding robots and a giant black orb that taunts Death herself can be. It builds and builds towards its climax, going from bigger to bigger enemies. I can't say that I was 100% invested in the characters, but I wasn't apathetic to them either. To see how it all turns out (without SPOILERS), you'll have to just wait...
Up next, the second half of the movie. Will it actually make less sense when it explains everything? Stay tuned...
