Holiday TV: Can 'The Net' Stop the Dreaded Y2K Problem?!?

Did the World end in 2000?
It didn't?!?

Well, see how it could have with this Episode of the 1998 Show based on the Film of the same.
This is 'Y2K: Total System Failure' from...

A man presents an example of his program that is supposed to fix the dreaded Y2K problem.

However, his presentation goes awry when someone plants a 'worm' in his program.

Back at his Office, he goes into the Elevator and it crashes.
Angela Bennet was framed for crimes by the Proletarians and is on the run.

When she hears about this man's death, she calls her comrade to help her get hired at his company.

Her comrade is away (for reasons that aren't explained) and only appears in these cutaway bits.
She gets hired and finds the worm, but there's a catch.

The other guy interrupts her and accidentally triggers the worm.

Oops.
The main bad guy- Trelawney- hears about the program being unleashed.
This was the plan...but later.  Was it going to be in 2000?

Now he's got to fly into Town to deal with it.
As it turns out, the third guy in the company was working with Trelawney.
I mean, he was the last one left, so the Scooby-Doo Rule applies here.

He shoots his friend while trying to get Angela and chases her as she tries to stop the worm from spreading and shutting down all of the services.
She ends up at the Airport, which was also affected by the worm.

The bad guy confronts him, but there's a catch- Trelawney's Plane will crash if she can't stop the Bug!

She does so, knocks out the bad guy and gets away.
Will she ever stop the Proletarians?
Yes.  She stops them in *literally* the next Episode.

*******

This one is a pretty good Episode, but sadly doesn't lean into the Y2K thing too much.  It is based on the idea in general- that the bug will make things shut down- but kind of dances around the issue.  They hint at it being a future problem.

Was I expecting them to reveal that the bug was a Proletarian Plot?  Yes.
Am I disappointed that it isn't?  Yes.

That said, they definitely traffic in the scare of 'the world shutting down' when the bug/problem happens.  They also make the Plot built around people trying to fix it.

As someone who lived through it, the scare was pretty hilarious.  Did anyone really think that this was going to happen?  Yes.

As a TV Drama, it is pretty good.  It's just kind of sad that this Show is so hard to find.
It has gotten NO DVD release in the US (only a Region 2 and 3 release around 2006).  I had to go- ironically enough- to the Internet Archive to see this one.

Well, there's my ride...

If you want more of The Net, stay tuned.
If you had no idea that this was a thing (even if you lived through it like me), well, you're not alone.
