Tubi Thursday: Reptilian (1999/2001)

 As far as I can tell, I never properly reviewed this one.

It is a famously bad Godzilla knock-off from South Korea.

Let's do this!

In the Cold Open, some people dig up strange objects in a cave.

One guy hits a big, glowing rock and it explodes...revealing a strange artifact.

Years later, the younger of the two men is digging up some bones in the desert.

Oh, and since Independence Day was hot, Aliens show up!

The skeleton turns out to be a giant one, as seen by the props designed to make it look as such.

The original Scientist shows up and warns them about Yonggary returning.

Nobody believes him.

The aliens revive Yonggary and, boy, is he...bad-looking.

Seriously, this Film was released in 1999 with unfinished CGI.
This is, as far as I can tell, from the 2001 re-release.

It is done...if you consider the 2nd Stage of Pre-Visualization to be done.

The Film is all about three things...

Random attacks by the Monster.

Army People arguing about what to do in a bunker.

The Aliens teleporting Yonggary away when the Scene is done.

Stomp like your cousin Godzilla now!

The old Scientist and a young Archaeologist figure out that the gem on Yonggary's head is the key.

The aliens teleport him away when it gets hit.

Can he be stopped now?

Well, yes.

With 20 minutes to go, the diamond is destroyed and Yonggary is out of the alien's control.

As such, they bring down another Monster for Yonggary to battle named Cykor.

It is defeated and now we like Yonggary? 
Alright then.

The End

This is bad in all of the best kind of ways.

It is cheesy.
It has really bad, unfinished VFX.

It is dumb.

It is very dated.

While this is technically a Remake of Yonggary, it is really a bizarre hodgepodge of Godzilla ideas.

We get a classic Godzilla design (more so than the original Yonggary), the aliens in the story from the '70s Godzilla and a look (with the CGI) like the then-recent American Godzilla (aka Zilla).

I will say that the build-up is not as fun as you'd hope.

The bad Scientist sees the Photographer take a picture of some dead workers, rips up his Film and tells him that they need to be 'on the same team.'

In literally the next Scene, the Photographer takes a picture of ANOTHER dead worker, the Scientist rips up his Film and says that they need to be 'on the same team.'

The former is crushed by Yonggary.  The latter is never seen again after Act 1.
What was the point?

Does it all work?
No.
Is it kind of fun to watch?
Yes.

A Film I can't recommend if you want to watch a good Movie.  If you want a so-bad-its-good Movie, you're in luck!
